For thousands of years our ancestors have been fervently trying to find ways towards a better health regime, towards greater protection against diseases, and towards attaining better synthesis with the greater world, thus finding happiness. Most of these systems predate modern science, which at times negates the efficacy of many of these time-tested systems. The debate rages on and it must be said that modern clinical science has not been able to offer all health solutions; at the same time, these alternative systems of medicine have been successfully serving the needs of millions of people over thousands of years.
These systems are used not only as ‘alternative’ systems, but also as ‘complementary’ systems, and at various points have been adding to the established system. At other points the alternative systems provide relief for ailments which are incurable in the established system. Sometimes patients move to the alternative systems, with success, after having failed in getting them treated. One great advantage of many of these alternative systems of medicines is that they offer holistic relief, treating the whole body and all the contributing causes, rather than attacking the primary symptoms. The side effects in many cases are much more harmless, thus making the potential gain from treatment much larger. Whether it is the Indian system of Ayurveda, which tries to bring a synthesis between the body and its surrounding, or homeopathy, which purports to treat a symptom through introduction of a similar symptom, alternative medicine offers a world of opportunity to new and ‘failed’ patients (from other systems). This section provides listings of alternative medicinal resources, and other informational resources.
