A certification is a designation or proof from a recognized and competent authority that declares that the holder (of the certification) has certain specialized knowledge or skill sets. The recruiter need not verify the knowledge or skill sets of every individual in the requisite area, the certification being a ready proof of such competence. Certifications are offered through a certification body. This is usually a business organization. Sometimes, the organization's business is directly related to the certification, as in a software firm that certifies individuals as competent to use its products. In other cases, an organization (often a not-for-profit organization) exists wholly, or in large part, to offer a particular certification. Whatever its nature, the certifying body will decide upon the course contents and the policies of the certification.
Certifications are common in the industry, especially in the computer industry. Some organizations provide guidance as well as recognition to such certification bodies that enable such certifications to gain recognition in the industry. The prevalence of many industry certifications and the exponential growth of new certifications have resulted in a devaluing of the brand value and worth of such certifications in the eyes of many people. In some cases, exam content is easily found by certification seekers (through less-than-honorable methods such as "brain dump" web sites) allowing them to gain certification without knowing, or even understanding, the concepts being tested.
Certifying agencies have responded in various ways. Some certification tests have incorporated hands-on testing. While certification is a great asset in the market, one should verify that it comes from a recognized body, that its course content is relevant to today’s technologies, and foremost, that it really enables one to gain knowledge in the relevant area.
