The car has become... an article of dress without which we feel uncertain, unclad, and incomplete. ~Marshall McLuhan, Understanding Media, 1964
Car is no more a mere transport vehicle, taking people from one place to another. Driving a car now is about thrill, luxury and the driving experience. Almost everyone, from early childhood, has a dream car that s/he would like to drive one day. People have a preference, between ordinary cars and great cars, between cars that also ran and the Porsche!
Porsche is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury high-end automobiles. Founded in 1931, this company is majority-owned by the Piëch and Porsche families, and has its headquarters in Zuffenhausen, a city district of Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg. The official "date of birth" for the first Porsche is considered being June 8, 1948. Since then, Porsche has been delivering a variety of models, each offering high-tech features.
Porsche vehicles are the product of eccentric and brilliant ideas executed by genius German engineers. They are robust, and stylish, and are equipped with state-of-the-art features. Porsche cars are known for their sporty appeal, great styling, excellent performance and powerful engines. Members of the Porsche family were well known automobile engineers and its founder Ferdinand Porsche was the original designer of Mercedes-Benz S Type Models. Over the years Porsche had introduced some of the most popular sports cars such as the 911, Boxster and Caymen and the sports utility vehicle Cayenne.
The mid-engine Boxster and Cayman S serve as excellent sports cars. The Porsche Boxster is a mid-engined roadster. The first generation Boxster (the 986) was introduced in late 1996 as a 1997 model; and was powered by a 2.5 liter flat six-cylinder engine. The new variant, the new Boxster S, was introduced in the year 2000, and came equipped with a 3.2 liter motor. Since then, Porsche has introduced various models, each an improvement over the previous models. The 987 model for instance, which was introduced in 2005, is more powerful than its predecessor and featured styling inspired by the Carrera GT. The Porsche Cayman features a Manual transmission and Rear Wheel Drive train on the base model Cayman. This car is a mid-engined, rear wheel drive 2-seat sports car, first launched in 2006. Like the Boxster, most Caymans are assembled in Finland for Porsche by Valmet Automotive.
Porsche has received many awards and accolades, including the title of most prestigious automobile brand by Luxury Institute, New York, and the 2006 J.D. Power and Associates award for the highest-ranked nameplate. The Cayman has been the recipient of a number of awards too, some of which include, World Car of the Year (WCOTY) – World Performance Car of the Year 2006 and Top Gear – Sports Car of the Year 2005.
