Everyone likes to be healthy. The satisfaction of a healthy body and mind is fondly sought by a diseased body. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we are bedeviled by diseases from time to time. A disease is any abnormal condition of the body or mind that causes discomfort, dysfunction, or distress to the person affected or those in contact with the person. Sometimes the term is used broadly to include injuries, disabilities, syndromes, symptoms, deviant behaviors, and atypical variations of structure and function.
Our knowledge of pathology, etiology (science of causes of a disease), transmission modes, etc provide us with a better tool to attack diseases. Science has gained an upper hand over many diseases, like small pox, malaria, polio etc, while economics and politics have failed us as many of these curable or preventable diseases still plague much of the developing world. Working habits, eating habits, and other endemic conditions as well as lifestyle choices give rise to other diseases and conditions. Thus, diabetes, cancer, obesity, chronic cardiac problems, etc are mostly associated with improper habits, but modern methods and procedures have made them curable. Recently, many social conditions have come to be accepted as diseases, like repetitive stress injuries, post-traumatic stress disorder, etc, while we have got rid of many attitudes which referred to conditions like homo-sexuality as a disease. Today, we do not treat a disease as a diving affliction, or just rewards for a sinful life, but rather accept the universal susceptibility of all of us, and therefore try for their alleviation.
