Das Auto - Volkswagen

It is Volkswagen, not Volkswagen! This name has made for a quite a few interesting conversations. You pronounce the name right (roughly as folkswagen), tell that, in German V is pronounced like F in English, and sound wise. Few carmakers have as vivid and glorious a history as Volkswagen’s. This people’s car (literally means so in English) was a brainchild of none other than Adolf Hitler. In November, together with Porsche, Volkswagen overtook Toyota to become the world's largest car manufacturing group.

At a time, when only the rich could afford a car in Germany and rest make do with a motorcycle, Adolf Hitler conceived an idea of starting a state-owned car manufacturer that sells car at a price that common man could afford. Hitler was quite clear about what he wanted. A car that can seat 2 adults, 3 children and runs at a speed of about 60 mph. This car was to be made available to people at a cost of 990 RM through a savings scheme. The average earning of the time was about 32RM a week. During the year 1934, Hitler tasked the celebrated automobile engineer Ferdinand Porsche (founder of Porsche AG) to design a people’s car. Porsche, having previously worked on a similar, but never fulfilled idea, came out with a design that was fuel efficient, reliable, easy to use, and economically efficient in repairs and parts. First cars were produced in the year 1936 and more than 330,000 people eventually got hold of a car through the savings scheme. The 2nd World War had seen the rise and fall of the Führer, but the dream of his, Volkswagen, has only grown into a multi-billion conglomerate of the modern world.

Talk about Volkswagen is never complete without a mention of Beetle (the Bug), perhaps the most of popular and loved car of all times. It is the longest-running and most-produced automobile of a single design (between 1938 and 2003). During the mid-nineteenth century Beetle was the most comfortable and powerful car than most European small cars. In history of cars, Beetle comes across as a car without a parallel, a once in a lifetime phenomenon.

Volkswagen is known for producing innovative vehicles that are reliable and fuel-efficient. The Volkswagen Beetle might well have become synonymous with all that Volkswagen is known for, but there are many brands from the Volkswagen stable that have had their own share of glory. Prominent among them are the Volkswagen Passat, Jetta, Polo, and Golf/Rabbit. Today, Volkswagen produces a range of vehicles, including Sedans, Compacts, SUVs, Wagons & Minivans and Convertibles. Volkswagen also spearheads the cause of environment by introducing clean diesel (low sulfur diesel) powered engines that yield a 30% higher fuel economy as compared to gasoline, alternate fuel-based vehicles such as neat ethanol vehicles, flexible-fuel vehicles and electric vehicles. Today, Volkswagen has presence all over the globe, making it truly the number-one automobile manufacturer.
