By compulsion we must communicate. It could be business, studies, advice, or just the inherent need to express ourselves. Conferences fulfill this need wherein many people join in to express their opinions, either on a set agenda or generally. Our modern, complex and interconnected world frequently requires us to benefit from the wisdom of all when a single person is susceptible to folly. However, frequent conferencing can require large logistical support, planning and programming, and uses up a lot of money. Could something be done so that we can benefit from the conference without going through the bother of holding one or having to bear its expenses? Of course, and so was Teleconferencing, or Videoconferencing developed.

Videoconference is a technology and a system that allows simultaneous video and audio transmission between two or more parties, thus dispensing with the need to be physically present to deliberate. Through use of close-circuit-television, videoconferencing has been used for a long time, but these were prohibitively expensive for frequent and individual usage. Then normal telephone lines were used for transmission of data.

Later higher bandwidth ISDN telephone lines and better compression technology allowed better transmission. Dedicated teleconferencing units were developed by vendors which were widely used in business, governance, telemedicine and tele-education. Internet Protocol emerged in the 90s which brought conferencing to all internet users. Now there are many free and paid services which make teleconferencing possible for all uses. Thanks to conferencing, we have a smaller world today.
