Mr. Bumble shouted in Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist that “the law is an ass”. Tragically, even though we might think the same, we are frequently caught in much the same predicament. The cynicism with law and those involved with creating and administering it is so great that unless one can help it one stays away from the workings of law. Nevertheless, law has its utility. Law regulates life and gives it order, without which this world would resemble Darwin’s conception of nature where survival is of the fittest. Law ensures that even the unfit is able to survive by providing him with the same rights as the powerful. As Martin Luther King Jr. said: “It may be that the law cannot make a man love me, but it can stop him from lynching me, and I think that’s pretty important”.

Since order is a requirement of every aspect of life, laws have been made to cover all of them. There are laws for marriage, for adoption, for copyrights. Laws for crossing the road, laws for insuring vehicles, laws for making laws. Yes, there are many laws and traversing this terrain requires special knowledge. Fortunately we have the law schools. In an earlier age lawyers could do without them, but today lawyers need to be law school graduates. The law school provides comprehensive coverage of law issues. A law school is a technical school where the intention is to train people to be practitioners of the legal trade – in other words, a law schools enables a person to become a lawyer in that a law school provides more than just education about law. The instruction would vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, but would typically include legal traditions, history of law, philosophy of law, anthropology of law, and especially practice of law. A person may specialize in different aspects or areas of law; for example, one may major in company law or criminal law or international law.

With laws becoming vaster in number and scope, the task of interpreting and administering them is of utmost significance. This falls squarely on the lawyers who are competently trained in the large numbers of law schools around the world. This section of 01webdirectory provides links to many such law school resources.
