Personal training involves the use of a fitness authority to train and teach an individual the rules of exercise and how to achieve personal goals on a practical level.

Personal training may use all or any of the following: personal trainer, physical therapy, conditioning coach, dietary guidance etc. Prior to setting fitness goals and motivating an individual to commence a physical workout, a personal trainer must assess the individualís strengths and weaknesses with specific fitness appraisals.

A physical trainer educates an individual in various aspects of fitness and wellness apart from just physical exercise, including overall good health and (in some cases) dietary guidelines. A personal trainer must also take into account an individual's medical or health aspects before enrolling the individual to participate in an exercise regime.

The primary purpose of taking on a personal trainer is to enhance the elements of fitness and ensure improved body composition, physical functioning, and cardiovascular improvements. A number of research studies analysing the use of personal training among men and women have shown that personal training enriches behaviour patterns, reinforces confidence, heightens perceptual balance and renews self-efficacy.

In some cases, personal trainers may be a professional and expert in certain types of physical training, performance related exercise, exercise physiatrics, training philosophy, or client population. On the whole, every person trainer helps in developing a specific, customised exercise routine for a client on the lines of flexibility training, strength training, and aerobic exercise.

Personal trainers have to undergo specific training, certification and accreditation to prove their competency as a personal trainer. The certification and qualification benchmarks for personal trainers vary from country to country.
