Reiki is one of the newer systems of alternative medicines which has come up recently. In fact, the system was deviced in the 20th century only by Mikao Usui of Japan. It is claimed by its adherents to be a technique for healing physical or mental disease. Practitioners use a technique similar to the laying on of hands in which they claim that they act as channels for Reiki energy — which they say flows through their palms to specific parts of the body in order to facilitate healing.
The name Reiki comes from two Chinese characters, which mean ‘universal life force energy’. Reiki claims to manipulate this life force to heal ailments, and for a generally healthy life. Although Reiki is comparatively new, there are many systems of Reiki, like Celtic Reiki, Reiki Tummo, etc. Its tradition overlaps with Budhist, Taoist, Yogic, Ayurvedic and Qigong traditions, which has given rise to some controversy, apart from the fact that the scientific community regards it as a form of mysticism. However, numerous people are practicing or benefiting from Reiki, with some very closely knit Reiki communities. There are even many Reiki courses being offered across the world.
