Management, as the practices and strategies utilized to manage, direct and organize resources and men so as to achieve goals in the most efficient way, is an old practice, although its scientific adherence is rather new. Project management is a subdomain of management, and incorporates those tools and strategies that are used for the successful completion of a planned task. Project management may be defined as the application of tools, knowledge, skills and methodologies to a multitude of activities and fields so as to ensure that the projects proceed according to plan, and succeeds. It involves defining and then achieving goals through set strategies and plans. It incorporates many steps, like planning the project, estimating resources available, organizing the work, acquiring human and material resources, progress reports, execution of plan, and much else besides. This is done through control over some variables that include time, cost, quality, scope and risk.
Project management rose as an independent concept in the aftermath of the launch of Sputnik spacecraft by USSR in 1958 which left USA surprised. Incorporation of project management principles enabled USA to accelerate its own development process. At the same time, both universities and the industry were adopting management principles for enacting projects. Today, project management principles are many and varied – for example, there are many approaches like agile, incremental, iterative or phased – but they are used universally in most complex projects. Today, software solutions are available as well to ease the complex process of project management in larger projects.
