According to a study carried out by Harvard medical School, results showed that the fluorescents used in tanning beds were more likely to cause skin cancer than the UV rays from the sunlight. The UV rays from the sun are usually in three spectrums: the UVA, UVB and UVC. The UVC gets absorbed by the ozone layer surrounding the earth. Therefore, it’s harmless to man. The UVA, on the other hand, is the ray that‘s responsible for skin tanning. It penetrates the skin and stimulates the tanning, Think of it as a “slow roasting” ray. The UVB, on the other hand, is more intense and is responsible for skin damages and sunburns when one is exposed to the sun for extensive periods of time.
Now, research has shown that the UVA from tanning beds are three times more powerful than that from the sun while the UVB that’s emitted in very miniscule quantities can be compared to naturally bright sunlight. This is why it does seem like tanning beds work faster. They essentially “cook” or “roast” you faster. Not that it makes any difference to people as evidenced in the over 30 million Americans who frequent tanning salons every year in the US.
As a result of this close-proximity to UV radiation, studies carried out by the British Journal of Dermatology showed that people who use tanning beds are twice more likely to get skin cancer than those who sunbathe in the Mediterranean midday sun.
So, What Do You Do?
We don’t mean to become the “prophet of doom” or spread around some damper. No, if anything, we want you to be alive, well, healthy and to live long. That’s why we’re talking about this. While tanning beds are great for that year round tan, they are increasingly risky.
So, if you have been using them, you may want to switch to other tanning alternatives like sunless tanning towelettes, tanning sprays, tanning lotions and do a bit more sunbathing at all times of the year. Get out more frequently and take long walks to maintain your base tan. It is a good idea to use cocoa butter body creams, which are rich in vitamin E, and are capable of stimulating your body’s melanin cells. This will help keep your tan and skin healthy, supple and tanned.
Always practice safe sun habits and use your sunscreens when going out in the sun. Sunscreen lotions and creams tend to prevent the incidence of melanoma in later years of your life by protecting your skin from UVA and UVB rays; not to mention they provide the added nutrients necessary for keeping your skin healthy.
